“Is steak good or bad? What is the deal with grass fed vs non grass fed?”
Let's start by saying that no foods are inherently 'good' or 'bad', but rather some offer more nutritional value than others. Steak can absolutely be part of a healthy, balanced diet, especially when opting for lean cuts like sirloin, filet, or rump. These are packed with high-quality protein to support muscle repair and immune function, along with essential nutrients like iron (especially the easily absorbed heme kind), B vitamins (including B12 for energy and brain health), and zinc.
Where possible, I'd recommend opting for grass-fed or organic beef, as these options help to reduce your exposure to secondhand antibiotics and have a higher omega 3 to omega 6 ratio. While they can be a bit more expensive, I'd encourage you to prioritise quality over quantity, perhaps swapping daily, lower quality meat intake for a mixture of high quality cuts and affordable plant-based protein sources. Lentils, chickpeas, and beans are fantastic alternatives that are not only economical, but are also packed with fibre and other vitamins and minerals to support gut health.
